VenomEarlier this year, it was confirmed that Sony is preparing a “Venom” solo feature film to spin out of the “Spider-Man” movie series. And while the new film may or may not tie into the the character that appeared in “Spider-Man 3”, the actor who played Venom previously, Topher Grace, indicated he's not been asked about the role.

“I don't know. I haven't heard anything,” replied Grace when asked by ComingSoon.net if he'd been approached to appear in “Venom." In fact, Grace said he hasn’t had any discussions with the studio about the film.

Back in April, it was announced that the screenwriters of “Zombieland” — Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese — were onboard to pen the “Venom” adaptation. However, more recent reports have named Gary Ross as the writer and director of “Venom.”

Ross’ own involvement with the "Venom" film may also be in question, given that he has been tapped to replace Steven Spielberg as the director for "Matt Helm," a film based on the spy novel series by Donald Hamilton.

Unlike the Venom that was featured in “Spider-Man 3”, the “Venom” script reportedly casts everyone’s favorite alien symbiote as a “defender of the innocent” — a take which harkens back to the mid-'90s solo “Venom” miniseries which attempted to make the character into a viable anti-hero.

Should Topher Grace step back into his role or should there be an entirely new Venom in this film? Do you think that the “Venom” film should tie into the “Spider-Man” sequels? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below or on Twitter!
